Dr Wadha Ahmed Al Muftah

Dr. Al Muftah is the Qatar Genome Senior Director of QPHI. She joined Qatar Genome Program in July 2016 as Genomics Translational Manager and was appointed as Director of Qatar Genome in January 2024.
Dr. Al Muftah leads the realization of the strategic objectives of Qatar Genome and has initiated the genome interpretation projects that are focused on establishing computational genomics platforms to provide interpretation/ clinical reporting solutions, supporting high throughput panels, whole exomes and whole genomes for general health and wellness, pharmacogenomics, and disease traits.
Dr. Al-Muftah runs several clinical projects with the aim of integrating genomic research into clinical practice, and knowledge transfer of precision health to the community. The wealth of knowledge that has been developed over years are being used by Dr Al Muftah and her team to advance precision health studies in collaboration with the Sidra, Primary Healthcare and Hamad medical corporations. For example, studying the influence of pharmacogenetics on the clinical outcome of patients with early breast cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy in Qatar.

She earned her PhD from Imperial College London (ICL), studying under the prestigious Qatar Research Leadership Program (QRLP). Her thesis specifically interrogated genetics, epigenetics, and environmental connections causative for type 2 diabetes (T2D) in Qatari families. She was trained in the department of genomic of common disease at ICL and bioinformatics core at WCM-Q, where she used the state-of-art of sequencing technologies including whole genome sequencing and genome-wide methylation arrays.
She published the first association study of CpG methylation with T2D and BMI in an Arab population, during her PhD.

Dr Al-Muftah serves on multiple national health committees including the Advisory Committee for Biomedical Sciences programs at Qatar University, and the National Health Strategy -3.
With more than 10 years of research experience started before she joined the graduate program at ICL; gained at Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar, Imperial College London, and Qatar Genome. Dr Al-Muftah has published multiple scientific articles in leading journals and presented her work in international conferences.
